Dear friends,

Today, I want to focus on two important concepts with you: community (cemaat) and service (hizmet). Often, these two concepts are used interchangeably. However, they are quite different from each other in terms of both meaning and function.

What is "cemaat" (community)?

Derived from the Arabic root "cem," cemaat means a gathered or assembled group. Concepts like mosque, Friday prayer, community, and association, which come from the same root, all carry the idea of "coming together."

In Islam, when cemaat is mentioned, it refers to the congregation praying behind the imam. However, this concept is not limited to worship. Groups of people united around the same belief, idea, or a leader are also referred to as cemaat.

Cemaat is a structure, an organization, a unity. It has a leader, a goal, and is composed of individuals who have come together to achieve that goal. In religious communities, this goal is often: to announce and make beloved the name of Allah to humanity.

Community is a means, not an end.

What is "hizmet" (service)?

Hizmet is also a word of Arabic origin. Although it is not mentioned verbatim in the Quran, its conveyed meaning is strongly present in the spirit of the Quran: to advise truth, to advise patience, to enjoin good, to forbid evil, to invite people to the truth with kind words.

Hizmet is a devotion demonstrated by those who have dedicated themselves to Allah's cause, from Prophet Adam to the present day. In this respect, service is not an activity, but a consciousness. It is not a duty, but a way of life.

Service is the goal.

Conclusion

When evaluating a structure, we should ask this question: Are we serving the structure, or are we coming together for service? If the structure becomes the goal, service falls into the background. But if service is at the center, the community gains meaning.

Community is an organization. Service is the soul of that organization. If community is the body, service is the lifeblood of that body. The body cannot stand without its lifeblood.
