Between Sincerity and Lineage

Social structures have manifested in different forms throughout history as a result of individuals' search for meaning and the need for collective action. While the terms "Cemaat" (Community/Congregation) and "Hizmet" (Service) are often used interchangeably in Turkey's modernization process and generally in the Islamic world, these two structures bear fundamental differences in both intent and operation.

Hizmet (Service): Sincerity and Disinterestedness

Hizmet, in its simplest definition, is the sum of efforts made selflessly for faith, the Quran, and all humanity, with the aim of earning God's pleasure. From a theological perspective, the fundamental dynamic of Hizmet is "sincerity" and "disinterestedness." A person of Hizmet performs their actions not with the goal of gaining worldly status or power, but to establish the passion for giving life instead of the pleasure of living.

The main methodology of Hizmet is based on "representation" rather than words. There is a belief that the path to people's hearts can only be opened with sincerity and morality. In this context, Hizmet is a flexible and universal action that can change its methods according to the conditions of the time but never compromises on its fundamental principle of "positive action."

Cemaat (Community/Congregation): A Sociological Haven

The concept of Cemaat, as emphasized by Şerif Mardin, has served as "a haven for individuals" in societies experiencing the pangs of modernization. Specifically in Turkey, the vacuum created by the closure of dervish lodges and zawiyas after the Republic was filled by cemaat structures as a sociological necessity. For individuals migrating from rural areas to cities, cemaat offered both an identity preservation zone and a solidarity network.

However, the most critical point is the risk of cemaats gradually transforming into ideological structures. Their absolutization of their own hierarchies and truths can turn them from civil society organizations into closed circuits. When communalization dictates person-centered allegiance and a rigid hierarchy, the individual's free will and the universal purity of Hizmet face the danger of being crushed within the gears of this structure.

Cemaat tends to create a center of power by focusing on the structure, the leader, and the hierarchy. Hizmet, on the other hand, focuses on humanity and removing the barriers between God and people.

Means or End?

The fundamental reason why those who render Hizmet do not pursue the desire to control a state or gain power is that the primary goal is the human heart and soul. In a communal approach, structures that create an "other" emerge over time; this contradicts Hizmet's inclusive vision aimed at all humanity.

Any Hizmet movement should use its institutional identity and communal structure only as a means as long as it serves fundamental human and religious values; it should never make this structure an end in itself.

Ultimately, Hizmet is the silent yet profound journey of those who manage to spread the values they represent into life, far from conflict and power struggles.
