Pardon and Forgiveness

Imagine a classroom… Children sitting at their desks… Children with dreams, with smiles, looking hopefully to the future… And suddenly, that classroom falls silent. With the sound of a bullet, not only lives but also the conscience of a society is wounded.

What is Forgiveness?

Today, similar pains are experienced in many places around the world. Orphaned children, generations growing up with tears, people carrying heavy burdens in their hearts… In such a world, the question we need to ask is this: How will we heal these wounds? The answer is perhaps the most difficult but the most powerful: Forgiveness.

Forgiveness is to erase, to slowly remove the traces of the past from the heart. But its true meaning is this: to choose not to reciprocate evil against someone who has wronged you. The Quran provides a very clear path in this regard. In Surah Al-A'raf, verse 199, it is stated: "Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; and turn away from the ignorant." This verse is actually a compass for life.

To forgive… Sometimes it means remaining silent when you are in the right, sometimes not letting that resentment grow when your heart is broken, and sometimes saying "I will be different" despite the inner voice telling you to "retaliate."

Responding to Evil with Goodness

When the Prophet (PBUH) was asked about the meaning of this verse, the answer was very striking: "Do good to him who does evil to you, give to him who denies you, and connect with him who cuts ties with you." If we could truly incorporate these words into our lives, how many grievances would be healed, how many enmities would end?

The Quran also teaches us justice: "The recompense for an evil is an evil equivalent to it." But immediately after, it opens an even higher door: If you forgive, it is better for you. That is, forgiveness is not ignoring justice; it is being able to go beyond it.

One who wishes to be forgiven must also learn to forgive.

What is missing in the world today is not just justice; it is also compassion, and it is also forgiveness… Because forgiveness is not just an individual virtue. Forgiveness is a child smiling again, a mother's heart feeling lighter, a society getting back on its feet. And perhaps one day, somewhere, that single sentence from a person's heart: "I forgive you…"
