The "We won't let them be eaten!" reflex for our big brothers

The deepest obstacle the Hizmet Movement faces today is not external pressures but an absolutism of mindset nurtured from within. This absolutism is a mental closure that assumes it is the sole owner of the truth and perceives criticism not as a refutable contribution but as an existential threat. Its most visible manifestation is the sloganized defense reflex that has developed over the years: "We won't let Hizmet be defeated!"

Mind-Reading and Usurpation of References

Since absolutism operates on the assumption of possessing absolute truth, it declares every inquiry flawed from the outset. This claim of infallibility pushes the first defensive move towards mind-reading. The opposing side is not listened to; the "true intention" is deciphered within seconds.

"You are actually this, your intention is corrupt, your concern is not Hizmet." — This is not a discussion; it is a predetermined execution.

Once mind-reading is complete, shared sacred references come into play. Values like Hizmet, Risale-i Nur, and Hocaefendi cease to be a common ground for reasoning; they transform into unquestionable titles of immunity, shields for ego protection.

Anger Triggered by Internal Criticism

Criticism often comes from within from the start. Absolutist figures want to push this criticism outside the circle; they try to position the critic as "not one of us" and the criticism as "an attack from outside." However, this exclusionary attempt fails, and when it becomes apparent that the criticism is indeed from within, and moreover, using the same shared references, the anger escalates.

Because this situation means the sacred weapon is turned back on itself in their own hands. The discussion does not remain at the level of ideas; it rapidly descends to the "who are you" line, and from there to insults and outright personal disparagement. The aim is no longer to defend the truth but to crush, discredit, and silence the critic.

Regret–Denial–Anger Spiral

Over time, regret sets in. The harshness of the tone, the injustices committed, are partially realized. However, this regret serves not for true confrontation but for temporary relief; because the mechanism has not been questioned. With the next criticism, the same reflex, the same anger, the same demeaning language re-emerges.

When this cycle becomes institutionalized, defense takes on a sophisticated mask. "We are open to criticism," they say; but the boundaries are drawn so narrowly and vaguely that almost every sincere question falls into the destructive category. Then the hierarchy of sacrifice comes into play: "You haven't paid enough, so you can't speak." Loyalty and sacrifice replace truth and merit.

Every structure made untouchable for the sake of protection eventually rots from within.

Mental Ghetto and Mummification

When this entire chain is complete, what emerges is a mental ghetto and mummification. Everything from outside is coded as enmity, everything from within as betrayal. Consultation dies, renewal stops, mistakes become permanent. Universal moral principles are reduced to an introverted ego protection mechanism.

True loyalty does not begin with building a wall; it begins with being able to cross the wall and ask, "What did we do wrong, how can we be more sincere, more transparent, and more principled?" Sincerity begins with accepting mistakes, and dignity begins with standing against injustice — no matter who it comes from. Until this cycle is broken, the internal obstacle will always be more permanent than external pressure.
